Teaching Your Dog to Settle: The Key to a Calmer Home

Not every moment needs action—sometimes stillness is the goal

At Best By Farr Dog Training, we spend a lot of time teaching dogs how to move, respond, and engage—but just as important is teaching them how to do nothing. A dog that knows how to settle is easier to live with, less reactive, and far more balanced overall.

Why Settling Is a Skill

Many dogs struggle not because they lack obedience, but because they lack an “off switch.” Without guidance, they stay in a constant state of stimulation—pacing, barking, seeking attention, or reacting to every sound.

Settling is a learned behavior. It doesn’t happen automatically, especially in high-energy dogs.

Signs Your Dog Needs Help Settling

  • Restlessness or pacing indoors
  • Barking at small noises or movement
  • Difficulty relaxing when guests are over
  • Constant demand for attention or stimulation
  • Trouble calming down after walks or play

These behaviors often stem from a lack of structure around rest, not just excess energy.

How to Teach Calm Behavior

  • Use a designated spot like a bed or mat for relaxation
  • Reward calm, quiet behavior—not just active obedience
  • Incorporate commands like “place” or “down” with duration
  • Reduce constant stimulation—your dog doesn’t need to be entertained all day
  • Be consistent with expectations around downtime

Over time, your dog learns that calm behavior is not only allowed—it’s expected.

A More Peaceful, Balanced Dog

Teaching your dog to settle creates a more enjoyable home environment. It reduces stress, improves focus, and makes every other part of training easier.

At Best By Farr Dog Training, we help dogs develop both energy and control. A dog that can switch off just as well as they can turn on is a dog that’s truly trained—and truly balanced.
